Schoenberg/Moses und Aron, Chamber Symphony No.2 (Boulez, 1974/1980)
An unfinished three-act opera "Moses and Aaron" is one of Schoenberg's master works. Features speech-style vocals (Sprechstimme), solos and choruses. Composed by twelve-tone technique. The German libretto was based on 'Exodus' (Old Testament), but interpreted uniquely from the viewpoint of the Jews. The first and second acts were completed including orchestrations, but the third was unfinished. One of the greatest atonal operas, appeared after his disciple, Alban Berg's "Wozzeck". Conducted by Pierre Boulez and performed by BBC Symphony Orchesatra. Also includes 'Chamber Symphony No.1' (Op.38). (Sony, 2 CDs)
