The French composer, Olivier Messiaen's 'Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant-Jésus' ('Twenty Contemplations on the Infant Jesus') is a long piano suite (about two hours) based Catholicism. One of his masterpieces featuring lots of his original musical languages, such as 'modes of limited transposition', 'irreversible rhythms' and use of 'Songs of the Birds' as materials. It contains twenty movements, and the whole suite is organically constructed by using cyclic themes as leitmotifs. Clear and exquisite performance by a French pianist, Pierre-Laurent Aimard. Great.
