Bob Dylan/Blood on the Tracks (1975)

An American singer-songwriter and poet who had worked in folk and rock genres since his debut in recording in 1962 and had a great influence on popular music in general, Bob Dylan's fifteenth studio album (#1 on the US album charts. #4 on the UK album charts). Noted as his greatest album in the 1970s, featuring acoustic-based band sound centering on Dylan's vocals, guitar and harmonica, and including piano, organ, mandolin, 12-string guitar and pedal steel guitar, explicitly confessional lyrics on the breakdown of his marriage, and lots of quiet and melodic songs. Includes the single "Tangled Up in Blue" (#31 on the US charts). All the songs written, composed and produced by Bob Dylan.

Derek and the Dominos/Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs (1970)

A blues rock band formed in 1970 by English guitarist/singer/songwriter Eric Clapton (vocals, guitars) with the three members of Delaney & Bonnie & Friends, Derek and the Dominos's only studio album (#16 on the US album charts). Duane Allman from the Allman Brothers Band plays the lead and slide guitar as a guest on 11 of the 14 tracks. Southern rock/swamp rock-oriented earthy sound influenced by the roots music of the Southern United States, such as country and blues. The highlights are the guitar battle between Clapton and Allman, and Clapton's soulful vocals. The famous title track "Layla" is a passionate and wistful love song inspired by Clapton's unrequited love for Pattie Boyd the wife of George Harrison. Produced by Tom Dowd and Derek and the Dominos.

Marlene Dietrich/Der Blonde Engel (2001/1930-1964)

The 2001 digitally-remastered compilation (EMI) featuring major 25 tracks sung by Marlene Dietrich, a German-born actress and singer. Excerpted from the four-CD box set of the same name. All the tracks are the German versions. She worked in the German theater and film world during the 1920s, went to the U.S and became a movie star in the 1930s. She mainly worked as a singer from the 1950s to the early 1970s. Burt Bacharach had arranged her songs from 1958 to the 1960s. Vocal pop with mainly orchestra, featuring her distinctive husky bass voice (contralto) and half-spoken style vocal style. "Ich bin von Kopf bis Fuß auf Liebe eingestellt/Falling in Love Again (Can't Help It)" is a famous piece known as an insert song of the film "The Blue Angel" (1930). "Puff, Der Zauberdrachen" is a cover of Peter, Paul and Mary's folk song "Puff, the Magic Dragon". "Sch... Kleines Baby (Hush, Little Baby)" is a cover of American traditional song. "Lili Marleen" is a popular song of the World War II period. "Sag mir, wo die Blumen sind" is a cover of Pete Seeger's folk song (anti-war song) "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?". "Die Antwort weiß ganz allein der Wind" is a cover of Bob Dylan's song "Blowin' in the Wind".

Dexys Midnight Runners/Searching for the Young Soul Rebels (1980)

An English pop band led by Kevin Rowland (lead vocals, bass, guitar, piano, songwriting) and formed in Birmingham in 1978, Dexys Midnight Runners's debut album (#6 on the UK album charts). British pop/new wave featuring the horn section throughout, and combining the aggression of punk and the influence from soul/R&B in the tradition of English Northern soul movement. Includes singles, "Geno" (#1 on the UK charts) and "There, There, My Dear" (#7 on the UK charts). "Geno" is a tribute song to the soul singer Geno Washington. "Burn It Down" is a re-recorded version of the first single "Dance Stance". "Seven Days Too Long" is a cover of the Northern soul classic by Chuck Wood.

Donovan/Sunshine Superman (1966)

A British singer-songwriter born in Glasgow, Scotland, Donovan's third album. Released from the US Epic Records (#11 on the US album charts). Pop and psychedelic folk rock blending the elements of folk, jazz, blues, psychedelia and baroque pop, with the rock band formation including sitar, tabla, double bass, winds, strings, and harpsichord. Jimmy Page joined on electric guitar. Includes a hit single "Sunshine Superman" (#1 on the US charts). Produced by Mickie Most, known for his works with the Animals and Herman's Hermits. The 1967 UK version (Pye Records) is different in tracks from the US one. The 2005 remastered CD includes seven bonus tracks. The 2011 reissued 2-CD set includes the stereo versions of all the tracks of the US album.

DJ Shadow/Endtroducing..... (1996) *

An American music producer, DJ and turntablist born in 1972 in San Jose, CA, known for his developing experimental instrumental hip-hop, DJ Shadow's first full-length album (#17 in the UK album charts). Released from the UK label Mo' Wax. A masterpiece of introspective and abstract instrumental hip-hop/trip-hop with merging the elements of hip-hop, soul, funk, jazz, rock and ambient. Melancholy sound at slow tempo. All the tracks are composed by editing multi-layered samples from vinyls. Recognized in the Guinness Book of Records as "the first album to be recorded using only sampled sounds". Includes singles, "Midnight in a Perfect World" and "Stem" (the album version).

The Dictators/Go Girl Crazy! (1975)

An American rock band led by Andy Shernoff (bass, lead vocals, songwriting) and formed in New York in 1974, the Dictators's debut album. The Dictators is one of the most influential US proto-punk bands, like a bridge between proto-punk bands such as MC5, the Stooges and New York Dolls, and New York punk bands since the mid-1970s. Pop-oriented sound influenced by the 1960s American garage rock and British Invasion pop, including elements of both punk and heavy metal. Lots of good songs like power pop, featuring catchy melody, chorus harmony and heavy metalic twin guitar. "I Got You Babe" is a cover of a hit song by Sonny & Cher. "California Sun" is a cover of a song performed by Joe Jones. Produced by Sandy Pearlman and Murray Krugman (known for their work with Blue Öyster Cult).

An English rock band formed in London in 1976, the Damned's third album (#31 on the UK album charts). Released after the guitarist Brian James left the band. Instead of Brian James, Captain Sensible became the main songwriter and played the guitar on this album. Pop-oriented punk influenced by the 1960s garage/psychedelic rock. Includes the singles, "Love Song" (#20 on the UK charts), "Smash It Up" and "I Just Can't Be Happy Today". "Looking at You" is a cover of MC5.

Doves/The Last Broadcast (2002)

An English indie rock band formed in Cheshire in 1998, Doves' second album (#1 on the UK charts). Lyrical and dopey guitar rock with beautiful melodies, like Radiohead, the Verve and Coldplay, or more older, Manchester's dance-oriented rock bands such as New Order and the Stone Roses. Features three singles, 'There Goes the Fear' (#3 on the UK charts), 'Pounding' and 'Caught By the River'. 'M62 Song' is an adaptation of 'Moonchild' by King Crimson. The guest musicians are Sean O'Hagan from the High Llamas (arrangement) and others.

A German electro duo from Hamburg, Digitalism's debut album. Released on French house label 'Kitsuné'. Punkish electro indie rock featuring Kraftwerk-like "pip-pip" electronic sounds and live drums. Disco beat like Daft Punk. The lyrics are English. Features single tracks, "Idealistic", "Zdarlight", "Jupiter Room" and "Pogo". "Pogo" is a melodic tune in New Order style. "Digitalism in Cairo" is a song reediting The Cure's "Fire in Cairo". Recommended to those who like rock-oriented dance/club sound such as the Prodigy, Underworld, the Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim and Daft Punk.

Der Plan/Geri Reig/Normalette Surprise (1996/1979-1980)

A music performance group from Düsseldorf and one of the mainstays of the 1980s Neue Deutsche Welle (German New Wave) scene. Features ex-DAF member Kurt Dahlke (aka Pyrolator). A CD reissued on Ata Tak label in 1996. Includes all the tracks of first two full-length albums, "Geri Reig" (1979), "Normalette Surprise" (1981) and three additional tracks from early singles. Experimental and quirky techno/underground pop full of humor and childishness. The 1st "Geri Reig" has experimental sounds inspired by the Residents. The 2nd "Normalette Surprise" has electronic pop-oriented sounds influenced by Kraftwerk.

Dr. Dre/The Chronic (1992)

Dr. Dre is a founding member of the gangsta rap group N.W.A., and after leaving the group he has worked as a producer (for Snoop Dogg, Eminem and others), solo artist and record executive. His solo debut album. The style of this album (hip-hop influenced by P-funk such as Parliament/Funkadelic. Slow grooves, deep bass, soulful female backing vocals and heavy use of synths) was later called "G-funk" and became the mainstream of hip-hop in the early 1990s. Featuring a rapper Snoop Doggy Dogg (later Snoop Dogg) in full scale. Includes hit singles, "Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang", "Fuck Wit Dre Day (And Everybody's Celebratin')" and "Let Me Ride".

The guitarist and originator of instrumental surf rock, nicknamed "King of the Surf Guitar", Dick Dale's best compilation. Breakneck staccato picking technique and exotic melodies in the Middle Eastern style. He had a great influence on lots of later guitarists, such as heavy metal ones like Eddie Van Halen. Includes 18 tracks, which are all the original versions of his best-known/hit songs such as "Let's Go Trippin'" and "Miserlou" (used in Quentin Tarantino's movie "Pulp Fiction").
